Small Herds of Small Cattle In Nicaragua

In Nicaragua, the only safe place to have your cattle at night is right in front of your house in the corral in the yard.  Many families have just a few cows.  Every morning someone from the family must walk the cattle or cows out to a pasture somewhere, and every evening they must be brought back to the house.  If they are left out in the pastures at night, they'll be eaten by neighbors.  When I interviewed one of Arnoldo Aleman's agricultural consultants, he told me that the time from birth to slaughtering weight for male cattle was two to three times that in the U.S. due to the low nutrition in their diet.
