Do You Have a Vehicle in Costa Rica? It's January. I Hope You've Paid Insurance

To be honest, we're already late to pay ours. I went down to the bank, not realizing how expensive it was going to be. 70,000 - 150 bucks! We've got to head back. We have a motorcycle, so this (mandatory) insurance is more expensive than for cars. I think what it covers is our medical care in the event of an accident. After January 1st, if you haven't paid and the cops check you and see it, they are supposed to take your plates, and then you have to do expensive paperwork with a lawyer to get the plates back.

Vehicle
Machamo insurance is only for minimal liability. Very pricey and bad coverage. It really more of a property tax on your car as liability insurance normally is not valued based on age and make of car.
Yearly insurance and Marchamo
In Costa Rica you have to take your vehicle to the yearly smog inspection then pay what is known as the marchamo, this is the sticker on your windshield that states that you paid taxes, basic insuranmce and some other expenses they charge you.
If you want additional insurance on your vehicle then you will have to pay more money,
The marchamo is mandatory and you will also pay late fines if you don´t have it ready by January 1st.
