how long can you have a car in Nica?

Hi there,

My husband and I are currently driving through Central America with the intention of making it to the tip of South America. In Jan 2009 we need to fly to NZ for two weeks to attend a wedding and are looking for a place to leave our car that is safe and secure. So far Guatemala is out, Belize is out...and I am hoping that we might be able to leave our car in Nica.

Does anyone know for sure how long you can have a foreign-plated car in Nica? And do they mark on your passport that you entered with a vehicle? And, I suppose, can you extend car permits?

I know as a Canadian I should be able to get 90 days as a tourist but does this apply to the car too?

Can this be done?

Thanks so much for any advice or help.

Kels

what i remember

I remember about four years ago a friend of mine brought his truck into Nicaragua. He got only 30 days for the truck. He had to get a complicated extension that was valid only 30 days also, by using a lawyer who worked at aduana in Managua. I don't know whether maybe others have had different experiences. I am pretty sure they did not stamp his passport with any indication that he had entered with the vehicle. You would be welcome to leave the car with us, but we live four hours south of San Jose, Costa Rica, so it might not be convenient.
