Will my cellphone work in Costa Rica?
Cell phone coverage in Costa Rica is on the global GPRS network. There is cell phone coverage in almost every corner of the country.
If you have a "world phone" and have the plan set up with your current carrier then you can just come to Costa Rica and start talking.
If you have a regular cell phone with any of the major U.S. providers, then it will necessarily have international capabilities. Most of the major carriers will allow you to add an international plan to your current plan on a monthly basis. It costs anywhere from $20 more per month with Verizon to $40 with T-Mobile. It is as easy as calling your cell phone service provider, having them add international calling for the month and going to Costa Rica!
This same proceedure can be done anywhere in Latin America. I am not sure what type of coverage you can expect to get in each of the different countries. What is it like in Roatan, Belize, Nicaragua, Panama...?

there are only a few phones
there are only a few phones that you can upgrade to global service (5 out of 100) Verizon has a global phone rental program. you just pay $20 for shipping and you can use it for up to 3 weeks. but the rates are ridiculous ($2.30 per minute / $0.50 per text / $25 per MB data!!!!) GPS on most of the phones wont work but if it does it would cost you hundreds of dollars to use it once. the best option i have found is rent a phone from a car rental place its about $4 dollars a day
check out
check out www.rangeroamer.com, They have coverage in Costa Rica and they have plans that will suit your budget. My uncle used a SIM card for Greece from them and he said he was satisfied. Hopefully this helps
