Two Months Down, Seven Months to Go

My wife Milyn and I have been here in Costa Rica for two months now. The first month, we lived in Grecia, house-sitting. The second month, we have been renting in Uvita, which is near Dominical and San Isidro PZ. Last week our daughter Rosalinda May was born, and so we are now three of us, living here in this beautiful place.

I used to live in Nicaragua, where I had a farm and tried to start an intentional community. I have a daughter in Nicaragua, Gloria, and one of the reasons we are living in Costa Rica now is to be close enough so that Gloria can come visit or live nearby. I would be happy to have her live with me, but at the present time her mother insists that Gloria live with her. I am happy to report that her mother has agreed that they will come visit in November.
Milyn and I have not decided yet whether we want to settle in the Philippines (her home country), Costa Rica, the U.S., or elsewhere. We have applied for a spousal visa so that she can visit the U.S. and we can see what that is like for us. We plan to travel back to the Philippines next May for her to have her interview, and after that we hope to visit the U.S.

Milyn and I left behind a nice garden in the Philippines at a house we rented; by now it has surely been devoured by the neighbor’s goats. Here we have planted camote, sugar cane, corn, beans, katuk, caliste, taro, and cranberry hibiscus. We might consider buying some land if the price were reasonable and we liked the location. We like Uvita, where we live now, but the land tends to be very expensive here. We both like warmer weather, and we are comfortable with what that implies for what we can choose to grow.

Our plans are overall open-ended. I’m spending some time in part-time work over the internet, and I’m also spending some time revising notes I have written in past travels. We invite anyone who is passing through Uvita to come stop by, and we will make you some Filipino food or a fruit shake (whatever’s your pleasure!).

house sitting

That was before we started this website.  We met someone on one of the yahoo lists.  It worked out well for everybody, and we are still friends with her.  I think most house-sitting jobs go to people who are local acquaintances, though, because there's less risk for the homeowner.
